Carmen in Tel Aviv was conceived as a community project. The national opera company came to a community center in a southern part of Tel Aviv and together created a Hebrew version of the opera, a mixture of professionals and amateurs. I spent a lot of time at the community center mostly with the drama group who found the design issue fascinating. It was a very exciting opening evening when the major of Tel Aviv addressed the audience and then the com-munity saw their own children and neighbours on a beautifully designed and lit stage amongst professional opera singers. This production has visited different communities throughout Israel and the opera company has created a tradition of reaching out to various communities.
